Hydrogen Vehicles Market Is Shrinking, Sales Dropped Over 90%
Despite active efforts from Toyota and BMW to establish themselves in the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle market, the space seems to be narrowing for this technology.
A recent report from consulting firm SNE Research shows that global sales of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles fell by 11.2% in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year.
What’s even more alarming is that only 2,119 hydrogen vehicles were sold during that period. For instance, in Europe, only 39 units of Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo were sold, representing an incredible 91% drop compared to the same quarter last year.
SNE Research stated, “While South Korea and China continue to recognize the hydrogen industry as a strategic sector and maintain government subsidies, the US and Europe are clearly backing electric vehicles.”
They invested over a million euros in hydrogen buses, then realized they had nowhere to fill them.
With underdeveloped hydrogen fueling infrastructure, high vehicle prices, and expensive maintenance costs, hydrogen vehicles are expected to continue losing their appeal in the global race for sustainable mobility.
